But in 2019, Knight and her team were able to walk through the mansion and see how natural light and landscaping could be optimized for future projects. “We looked at the line of sight within the site and the view from the site and thought about what kind of house we wanted to build,” explains the designer.
In consultation with the client, Knight, business partner Nicole Varga, and architect Mason Kent designed a 6,200-square-foot, three-story home with four bedrooms on the second floor and a guest bedroom on the lower level. We started creating a plan. .
The goal was to create a home where the customers (a married couple and their three children) can relax, work, have fun, and play, both now and for decades to come. “We wanted styles and materials that would stand the test of time. Their children are teenagers and they eventually want to bring home not only their own children but also their partners. ” says Knight.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the team at Knight Varga Interiors aimed for a warm, West Coast modern look that’s as relevant today as it is tomorrow. To accomplish this, the team used European white oak hardwood flooring in most rooms, which is “more neutral and grayish” in width than North American white oak. Large slabs of “Dekton” have been installed in the powder room, lounge, and office on the main floor. “The homeowner wanted their dog to spend time with them in the lounge area on a regular basis, so we thought it was important to have a more durable flooring underfoot.” explains Mr. Knight.

To create continuity throughout, the team chose to repeat materials with different cuts and textures on the inside and outside. Wood paneling in the kitchen and some bathrooms and wall decorations in many rooms complement the color of the floors. “Since it’s a large open concept home, we wanted to incorporate more texture and tones rather than changing materials or using a lot of different colors. We wanted everything to flow and be very gentle and very calming. I wanted it to feel like it,” Knight says.
A minimalist palette of black, white and oak with steel accents creates a modern and peaceful atmosphere. The steel staircase was built off-site, lifted in pieces by crane, welded and finished on-site, and painted the same white as the walls. “The style makes a statement, but it’s quiet,” says the designer. Black arches in areas such as the dining room create clarity without obstructing the view.
The natural wood theme continues into the outdoor covered patio area, with the same wood used inside for the soffits. Outdoors, there’s a pool, hot tub, and beautiful patio area for year-round entertaining.

Inside, there’s a large home gym, media room, and ample storage space to accommodate your active family, and the kitchen’s durable materials are designed to withstand the wear and tear of the family’s many chefs. Masu. There is a dog run next to the house, and the owners can watch their two dogs from inside the house.
Convenience and ease of living were also top priorities for the family, so the team at Knight Varga Interiors designed the home with high-tech features such as a whole-home control system, including controlling lighting, security, and blinds with a wall-mounted iPad. to ensure that it is equipped. .
Sustainability is also always top of mind at Knight Varga Interiors, and their team makes it a practice to ensure that their suppliers use FSC-certified wood and are carbon neutral in their shipping and production processes.
“Longevity is the first step when people build their forever home,” Knight says. That meant selecting the highest quality materials, appliances and furniture from brands such as Miele, Furgol He Milano and Inform He Interiors. ” [furniture] All items that should be reupholstered, reinvented, refinished and never thrown away,” says Knight.
As with many projects during the pandemic, the biggest challenges the team faced were related to scheduling issues. Fortunately, our client was able to continue living in their existing home while battling material delays. But when it comes to building a home this beautiful, it’s well worth the wait.
