Nearly a century after the Negro League’s Kansas City Monarchs became the first professional baseball team to host a baseball game under artificial lights, the Coastal Plain League’s Tri-City Chili Peppers are celebrating their innovation. He has added his own unique arrangement to it. Teams play “cosmic baseball” under UV-reactive uniforms, caps, bats, balls, and powerful black lights that essentially illuminate the entire game.
The Colonial Heights, Virginia-based team worked with uniform vendor 3n2 to create glow-in-the-dark uniforms for both the Chili Peppers and their opponents, and the hats were created by Bretmor Headwear. Games will be played using UV-reactive equipment, including bats from manufacturer Tucci and batting helmets and baseballs from Wilson Sporting Goods. Lighting company Sonaray took on the challenge of creating a black light powerful enough to play under.
The Chili Peppers will take to the field at Cosmic Baseball on June 1, 15, 28 and July 20 for what the team is calling a “historic baseball experience.”
