The Edmonton Oilers lost 5-0 to the Stars on Wednesday in Dallas, where their hard-working backup goaltender was left out.
Edmonton had up to 30 chances early on, but three posts and a power play (0 of 4) prevented them from getting the puck on net, limiting them to zero. Then the bottom fell in the final seven minutes of the middle frame when the Oilers committed turnover after turnover to make the best impression on the neighborhood bakery. When the siren mercifully sounded after 40 minutes, the game was 5-0 Dallas.

But all the credit goes to Dallas…they were the better team tonight and it showed on their way to an eight-game winning streak. Stars keeper Jake Oettinger was solid. Calvin Picard, on the other hand, deserved more support than he got.
Here’s the story of the tape…and it’s not pretty.
Edmonton Oilers player stats
calvin pickard. 4. Good save from Ben early on. On Dallas’ 2-on-1 that led to a 1-0 lead, he was mostly left to his own devices, but still got enough pucks on the way. Consecutive saves from Johnson at the top of the crease. And Stankoven. Late in the first, Hintz’s shot hit his toe. Pavelski makes a solid stop in the second half of the first cornercent. opened 2n.d. By stoning Lindell from the slot. Stopped Robertson in the Dallas PP. He went 2-on-1 with steals. In the end, we lost again due to a bang-bang play in the Dallas PP. He then completely robbed Johnson with a grade “A” shot from the mid-slot. The Stars went 4-1, making them 3-0. 4-0 due to D zone turnover. A turnover behind the goal line made it 5-0. There was too little help.
conor mcdavid. 5. Created early chances for Nugent-Hopkins and Bouchard. He then danced into Dallas with a lightning-fast sortie, but both his initial shot and rebound were saved. Set Draisaitl once on PP with a recessed post.A steal under the goal line led to Nurse’s second shot.n.d.. One of the best oilers for a poor night. But some of the power-play failures have stuck with him, too.

ryan nugent hopkins. 5. Like McDavid, he was solid. A shorthanded breakaway sent Carrick all the way. got 2n.d. Period travel. In 5v5 CF, he led all Oilers 22-9, 71%. He shot in 19:40 and had three hits. However, there are also some issues with 0-4 PP.
zach hyman. 4. Subtracted 1cent Period is PP, but he and his comrades were not able to accomplish much with it. Three successive chances with the man advantage were unsuccessful. It’s not often that you realize this very good player is this small.
nurse darnell. 2. A rough, stormy night. Smart defensive sticks disrupted Dallas’ developing 2-on-1. But seconds later I received a disturbance call and (even worse) a 10-minute cheating call. As a result, he was taken out of the rotation for an extended period of time, with the remaining 5D remaining in the rotation. At 2-0, I couldn’t knock down a cross pass. And…the worst possible timing led to Dallas going 4-1 and 3-0. Honestly, it was a reading that belied the players’ considerable experience (and obvious lack of situational awareness). We need to improve more. They need Nurse to quickly become a “better version of Darnell.” The playoffs are just around the corner.

Cody Ceci. 5. Call post 1cent. The sharp play up front didn’t give Robertson any chances. The second shot was a good shot.n.d. In the same way. At 2-0, they couldn’t corral the pass. Part of the 5-0 problem. But the 5-on-5 High Dangers were 7-4 on Ceci’s watch. he was decent.
Leon Draisaitl. 3. Double-teamed Leon Draisaitl turns the puck over at his own blue line, 1-0. He was unceremoniously dumped in front of the Dallas net, but there was no call from Steve Kozali. He beat the goalkeeper with a clean bye and scored PP1 time from the post. A turnover from a diagonal pass attempt in their own zone led to a 4-0 lead. Oh, the first part of his PP his unit that failed.
Adam Enrique. 4. Impressive backcheck in 1cent In response to the evolving Dallas jailbreak. Fed Ceci made a good point shot. 4 hits, 0 shots.
Corey Perry. 5. A pigeon stopped the pass heading towards the No. 1 slot.cent. He hit the crossbar with a slapper from the top of the circle. -3, but it’s very hard to suggest he’s the problem with any of his three. He was the only guy to come back for two (twice!) 2-on-1s.
Matthias Ekholm. 4. An interference call made it 2-0. Part of a fire drill at 5-0. At 5:5 CF, it’s just below the break-even point.

Evan Bouchard. 6. 1 couplecent A shot of the times. Fine keeping on the offensive blue line extended the Oilers’ shifts in the offensive zone. 5 shots. One of the few defensemen to have a decent night, High Danger was 4-3 5v5.
ryan mcleod. 4.2n.d. Period shot. I skated well, but ultimately didn’t achieve much.
Evander Kane. 5. Nice feed to Ceci to score two dangerous pointsn.d. Period shot. He led the team with five hits. Break even in 5v5 CF. At least he showed some signs of life. But he doesn’t seem to be able to score yet.
Warren Vogel. 4. I just couldn’t seem to get back on track all night, even though I couldn’t make a decent effort.
Brett Crack. 4. During the PK, he brilliantly recovered the puck deep in his own half, leading to a clearance. Dallas came back full force on the breakaway and put pressure on the shooter before the puck went wide. However, he was 0-5 on the ice in High Danger Against 5-on-5.
Vincent Desharnais. 4. 3 1cent Period hit. But HDSC is 0-5 at 5v5. He was crushed by shot sharing and struggled with the puck hitting his stick.
Sam Carrick. 4. A great short-handed breakaway, but the goalie’s toe popped out to stop it. Giveaway at 5-0. 4 shots.
Matthias Jeanmarc. 5. There was a big net in 1cent But Ben got hit with a stick at the last minute. PK was also cleared. 3 dangerous chancesrd. Proper.
conor brown. 4. Some sound PKs work. There aren’t many 5-on-5 games.
Edmonton’s record fell to 45 wins, 25 losses, and 5 draws, with 95 points.Canucks back five scores one point.cent In the Pacific, they have a three-point lead in Las Vegas with a game in hand.
