As widespread layoffs continue to sweep the tech industry, many workers are looking for their next step outside of Silicon Valley.
In 2022, like many others, Nancy Correa’s life unexpectedly changed when she suddenly lost her job.
“I was part of the first round of layoffs that this technology company had, and I think they laid off over 10,000 people,” Correa said.
After working in her company’s communications department for two years, Correa found herself navigating a volatile job market. The respite from her disappointing online job search has left her pondering her next move, especially following reports of a surge in companies announcing further layoffs.

“It worries me when I hear about the layoffs that are happening right now, especially of people of color, because we bring color to the room, we bring different perspectives, we bring color to the room, we bring different perspectives, we all absorb and use our content. Because it brings value to people in whatever form it takes.” Maybe so. ”
Tech giants including Meta, eBay, Pixar, and most recently Google have all recently announced layoffs.
Google said in a statement that “throughout the second half of 2023, many teams made changes to improve efficiency… Some teams continued to make these types of organizational changes, including eliminating some global roles. “We will continue to support the affected teams.” Employees are looking for new roles both here at Google and outside of Google. ”
For Correa, losing her job inspired her to pursue her true passion, a project called Remarkably Us. With this, she aims to highlight the stories of successful women of color who, like herself, grew up in her foster care system.
“I thought back to my time as a child in the foster care system and how alone I felt. But we are not alone, and why do we only hear negative statistics? So I wanted to build Remarkably Us to highlight the stories of Latinas, and now that I’ve done that, I can go back and talk more positively to other women about this. “You can do that,” she explained.
