Television viewers are watching sitcoms.Married and has childrenaired for 11 seasons, but when the time came for the show to end, at least two of its cast members weren’t even informed.
Ed O’Neill, who played the cantankerous patriarch Al Bundy on the show, recently said “MeSsy” Podcast The show was hosted by Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Christina Applegate, the latter of whom played his daughter Kelly Bundy on the show.
During their time together, O’Neal recounted the moment she found out “Married,” which aired on Fox from 1987 to 1997, was being canceled.
O’Neill recalled being outdoors at a guesthouse in his Ohio hometown when a car pulled up with a “Newlywed” sign and tin cans.
“I thought, ‘Oh, they just got married.’ So I was standing there and they got out of the car, and they were husband and wife,” he said. “She was in a gown and he was in a tuxedo, and he said, ‘Oh my God, it’s Al Bundy from Ohio.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, congratulations. You’re married.'”
Then came the awkward moment: “The woman said, ‘I’m so sorry about your show,’ and I said, ‘What do you mean?’ And the man said, ‘Oh my goodness, he doesn’t know. It’s on the radio. It’s been cancelled.'”
The “Modern Family” star explained that the newlyweds were so apologetic that they invited him over to their house and treated him to champagne.
“They said, ‘We’re so sorry,’ and I said, ‘We want to hear it from you directly,’ so, yes, I went in. I love champagne.”
Applegate said she could relate to O’Neill’s story, recalling the show’s cancellation “through a guy who knew a guy who worked for my assistant at the time. That’s how I found out. We never got a call.”
“Married… with Children,” which also starred Katey Sagal and David Faustino, told the story of a working-class family led by shoe salesman Al Bundy. The series gained popularity for its sharp and sometimes crude humor. It was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards during its run.
