Bankless founder Ryan Sean Adams recently sounded the alarm Issues surrounding North Korean IT personnel infiltrating virtual currency projects.
Adams warned that the era of anonymous developers in cryptocurrencies may be over.
He believes that even a large company like the Ethereum Foundation is not immune to such threats.
The warning comes in the wake of a CoinDesk Media investigation that revealed that many cryptocurrency projects were unknowingly hiring workers from North Korea.
The extensive list of affected projects includes Cosmos, SushiSwap, and Yearn Finance.
North Korean workers created seemingly legitimate identities and even active GitHub profiles to secure jobs at crypto companies.
On one occasion, the accent of a North Korean IT worker who claimed to be from Japan was exposed.
Earlier this year, the United Nations Security Council revealed that thousands of North Korean workers had successfully infiltrated Western tech companies.
The council also estimated that the Hermit Kingdom had stolen more than $3 billion worth of cryptocurrencies.
Lazarus Group, a hacking group allegedly run by the North Korean government, is famous for being behind the $625 million Ronin Bridge exploit.
The stolen codes will be used to finance the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
North Korea faces various international sanctions related to its development of nuclear weapons.
Cryptocurrency has now emerged as a major means of livelihood in North Korea. It also relies on counterfeit consumer goods, arms trafficking, and other illegal activities to fund its nuclear program.
