A drone believed to be loaded with explosives struck an open field near Israel’s Ramon airport, near the Jordanian border, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred northeast of the city of Eilat, about 600 feet from the Israeli-Jordanian border.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the incident involved a “suspicious aerial target” believed to be a drone.
Eilat city reports said the drone crashed just north of the airport, causing a fire at the scene. However, the Israel Airports Authority said there was no strike at the airport itself and no damage or injuries were reported.
Ramon Airport is located approximately 18 miles from Eilat, adjacent to the border with Jordan. The incident follows several drone strikes against Israel by the Iraqi Islamic Resistance Forces, a coalition of Iran-backed militias.
On Monday, a drone launched by an Iraqi militia attacked an Israeli naval base in Eilat, causing minor damage to a hangar. The day before, the IDF intercepted another suspicious air target, believed to be a drone originating from Syria.
While most of the drones launched by Iraq’s Islamic resistance group fail to cross the Israeli border or are intercepted by air defenses, Eilat has been targeted by drones such as Yemen’s Houthis and Syrian-linked groups affiliated with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. It faces attacks from various Iranian-backed groups.
