Coralie Ferguito’s The Substance is this year’s horror hit, offering a Brian Yuzna-level physical extravaganza that has been missing from the genre for years. Viewers with an aversion to needles, deteriorating flesh, and infected wounds may want to avoid this production. The film’s final 20 minutes are a glorious, gory fantasy of monsters and blood, featuring physical mutations reminiscent of Paul Crane’s toxic waste-covered character in “RoboCop.” Masu. One of the best movies of 2024.
Of course, this movie is not only interesting in and of itself. In fact, this is an ironic melodrama about the impossible beauty standards unfairly applied to women in Hollywood. Demi Moore plays Elizabeth, an Academy Award-winning actress turned fitness guru. Elizabeth is about to be fired from her daily training show simply because she turned 50, and the studio is looking for someone half her age. Elizabeth learns the secret of a mysterious rejuvenating drug called Substance, discovered in a secret locker deep in Los Angeles. When she injected herself, she fell to the ground and her back split open like a shell. From there, a fully grown Margaret Qualley, a younger replica of Elizabeth, hatches. As Quarry, Elizabeth has to stitch up her old body and leave it on the bathroom floor to heal. The new Elizabeth, who calls herself Sue, returns to her old training job. Just like people all over the world, she loves her beautiful and vibrant body.
However, there are rules. Elizabeth has to move back and forth between her two bodies every seven days. without exception. Also, when she was young, she had to express spinal fluid from an old, unconscious body and inject it into herself every day, without exception. Naturally, “Sue” breaks both of these rules, with the worst possible consequences.
Horror fans will likely be on the same wavelength as “The Substance,” but other modest audiences are turning a blind eye. According to a report in the Guardianpeople reportedly didn’t feel all that hot while watching the movie.
Substances include needles, flesh, and goop
Viewers have taken to social media to express their distaste for “The Substance,” sometimes the subject matter and, in some cases, the filmmaking. An Irish reporter named Simon Tierney noted that the film was too long (running time 141 minutes), but also noted that most of the audience fled the theater when the truly terrifying things started happening. he pointed out on Twitter/X “Some people walked out during the screening,” and “One of the most violent movies I’ve ever seen. The last hour is almost unwatchable. The first hour is amazing.” A Twitter user named Alan Heathcock made the same point, but unapologetically praised it. I’m saying: “I’ve seen thousands of movies and it’s very hard to be shocked. But this gloriously insane movie was so shocking on the 11th. ‘Substance’ is for the faint of heart. (A few people left midway through my viewing of the movie), but be warned, it quickly became a cult classic.
“Rad Bible” also records viewer reactions.and they were a mixture of disgust and frenzied elation alike. Of note, I found a user on Reddit who pointed out that while the medical gore is fun, it’s the simple aging scenes that are most disturbing. “I’m not a total sucker when it comes to gore these days,” a Reddit user reportedly said, “but the scene where Demi Moore almost has to break her knee to walk is the one that made me think this… It’s one of the most disgusting movies I’ve seen in a long time. Another Reddit user said, “I’m glad to see this,” but added, “It was definitely a one-off watch for me.”
Yet another Substance fan said he needed some time to process all the gore, writing, “I started feeling nauseous for the first time after leaving the theater. There was so much to process throughout the movie. I think my heart needed to catch up,” he posted. ” After 141 minutes, yes, it’s perfectly appropriate to take some time to digest.
Has anyone actually barfed after watching “Substance”?
Are there actually reports of people throwing up in theaters, or are they just gross exaggerations? The Mirror found that Twitter user named Tara He and his date went to see the movie Substance, but refused to let their date drive them home because they didn’t know each other well enough to throw up in front of each other. “He literally just walked home in the rain to openly vomit. It’s a five-star movie.” Her date dropped her off, walked away, and apparently went around the corner to vomit violently. . It was a long time to hold it in, but I’m glad he didn’t throw up during the date.
As far as /Film can confirm, no one actually threw up inside the theater showing “Substance.” It is possible that a viewer voluntarily threw up or became ill for other reasons before taking their seats, but such incidents have not been reported.
Needless to say, “Substance” is a striking, confrontational film that aims to make audiences uncomfortable, and from the sounds of it, it succeeds. Such extreme films are often rumored to cause people to faint from fear or vomit in disgust, but such reports usually remain rumors and hearsay. The only way to be sure it’s real is to go to the theater yourself and test your courage. If you can handle surgery and gore, look at the other people in the theater around you. Be sure to share the report if the actual chunk gets corrupted.
