PHNOM PENH – Preliminary results from the National Election Commission (NEC) released on Wednesday announced that Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a landslide victory in Sunday’s general election. .
This election is held once every five years to elect 125 members of the Diet, and a total of 18 political parties participate.
As a result, the CPP received approximately 6.4 million votes, or 82.3% of the 7.77 million total valid votes cast, while Prince Norodom Chaklabus’ Funcinpec party received 716,443 votes, or 9.22% of the total valid votes. Shown.
CPP spokesperson Soc Eisan said that according to the CPP’s calculations based on the NEC’s provisional results, the CPP won 120 seats and the Funcinpec party won the remaining five seats.

In a special audio message on Wednesday, the prime minister said his eldest son, Hun Manet, was “most likely” to replace him in the new government as the new prime minister.
Hun Sen, 70, who has served as Cambodia’s prime minister for 38 years, did not say exactly when he would hand over power to his son.
Hun Manet, 45, is currently a member of the CPP Standing Committee and deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
Sunday’s general election was the Southeast Asian country’s seventh since 1993. In the last general election held in 2018, the CPP won all 125 seats in parliament.
The CPP has ruled Cambodia since 1979.
