To add to the excitement of the Paris Olympics, the two men will compete on Sunday for the title of “Fastest Man in the World.” The 100 meters is always a spectacular race to watch, and with three top American runners in the mix this year, there’s no reason to think it won’t be.
The pool has been the scene of many great feats. One of the stars of Paris is Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, who will be aiming for gold in the 50m freestyle to add to the 100m gold she has already won.
It’s a typical baseball packed Sunday, with the national night game being played between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.
Olympics Men’s 100 Meter Sprint
Almost everyone who wasn’t in the race Jamaican star Kishane Thompson’s predictions (-160) to win. He has the fastest time this year (9.77 seconds), but his heat time on Saturday was just 10 seconds off the pace.
Perhaps Thompson is just conserving his energy for Sunday’s semifinals and finals after posting the sixth-fastest time, and he may do the same in the semifinals, as the field also includes defending gold medalist Marcel Jacobs (+4000) of Italy, who is in 13th place with a time of 10.05 seconds.
Noah Lyles (+130) is considered the top American, but I would make a point of saying Kenny Bednarek (+1800) and 2021 silver medalist Fred Curley (+1500) are not to be overlooked. The duo posted a top time of 9.97 seconds on Saturday, with Lyles finishing 12th in 10.04 seconds.
Jamaica’s Oblique Sevilla (+1100) is also a threat, coming in fifth with a time of 9.99 seconds. Lyles will be competing in her first Olympic Games, but someone like Curley can handle the pressure of a final and could be the one to put the pressure on Thompson.

Olympics Women’s 50m Freestyle
Is it necessary to hold this event? Sarah Sjostrom (-2000) sets Olympic record The Swedish star clocked 23.66 seconds in the semi-final on Saturday, beating the previous record of 23.81 seconds set by Australia’s Emma McKeown in Tokyo.
Oh, and Sjostrom also holds the world record of 23.61 seconds, so it’ll be interesting to see if she can beat that mark. That said, there are seven other swimmers scheduled to jump in the pool.
One swimmer who won’t be in the pool is Simone Manuel of the United States, who didn’t make the final after posting an 18th-place time of 24.87 seconds. She won silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 but now can’t even crack the top 16. It’s a career that’s going underwater.
That leaves Gretchen Walsh (+1400) as the to pull off one of the biggest American upsets in swimming history, though realistically Walsh is in line for silver.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Maybe the Cubs got a head start on their collapse this season: A year ago, they were eliminated from playoff contention after a 6-1 September slump to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who finished in the final National League wild-card spot and made it to the World Series.
Chicago remains at the bottom of the National League Central Division despite winning two of the first three games of this series. The Cardinals rallied back to win, 5-4, on Saturday, when Chicago center fielder Pete “Crowe” Armstrong got an out in the eighth inning after second baseman Nico Hoerner missed the ball and Nolan Arenado’s short fly became a two-run single.
With the National League wild-card race tight again and St. Louis two games out of last place, the Cardinals will likely be catching a break. They had lost seven of their past 11 games before getting some unwanted help from the Cubs.
St. Louis right-hander Miles Mikolas (8-8, 4.99 ERA) will face Chicago left-hander Justin Steele (2-5, 3.38 ERA). Mikolas gave up four home runs, two of which were by Crowe Armstrong, in a July 14 win over the Cubs, but he is 6-5 with a 3.00 ERA in 20 starts against Chicago. Steele is 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA in six starts against the Cardinals. This will be Steele’s first game of the season.
